Folded fabric factory

One bottle of Stiffy down, who-knows-how-many to go. At the request of my fabric folding fiends, I helped with the application of stiffening medium to more than a dozen pieces of fabric today. They dried quickly outside.

Three boxes complete with lids and internal dividers have been completed to date. Now there is enough fabric for probably a dozen more. We must start eating more breakfast cereal, as the box board comes in very handy for strengthening the boxes.

  1. what a great idea! i actually just started reading your blog as we are delving into the unschooling realm this year ourselves with our 5 year old and i'm constantly on the look out for inspiration and affirmation for our choices..:)

can i ask for instructions on how you made the boxes? we have tons of fabric that are not enough for any one project, but boxes would be great!!

love your blog and thank you for the inspiration and affirmation that i'm looking for..:)

  2. Hi Cat, we're using directions from the book I posted about here in a previous post. It has some good tips, particularly for making dividers and locking inserts and stiffening the box with cardboard inserts. But there's a good YouTube video about the basic box folding here, so if you want to try experimenting, this is the basic box pattern we use. Have fun!

I really like this idea, and think the boys would enjoy it too. Could you explain a bit more about "Spiffy"? I assume it is some sort of laundry starch, but what does it look like (liquid/powder etc.)? Do you know its ingredients? As we live overseas I would have to find something similar to replace it with. Thanks.

  4. Hi Kitty, my comment above yours contains a link to a previous post about Stiffy. It's a liquid fabric stiffener which is non-toxic and water soluble. It's very readily available here -- and there are even several brands available -- but I'm not sure if the same is true where you are. No idea if starch would work. PVA glue thinned with an equal amount of water works pretty well, I've read.
