I have lived here (Southern California) my entire 40+ years and would have NEVER dreamed of a vacation in Joshua Tree (been there a few times), and yet you made it look so amazingly beautiful and interesting!
ReplyDeleteAnd btw, I had never heard of appendix "failure." How is that treated? And what causes it? I always assumed that the appendix was removed when there was an issue; I suppose that is just when they burst? Glad she got better and was able to join the rest of you :-)
LOL, Shawna, "appendix failure" was just a stupid term Noah coined while narrating one of those silly video clips. What she had was a ruptured appendix. These days they don't necessarily do surgery after a rupture. If they catch the condition before it bursts then yes, they'll often remove the appendix, but if there's a mess in there they'd rather settle it down with antibiotics first and operate 2-3 months down the road. Kids and young adults tend to respond well to antibiotics and have a lower risk of surgical complications if the appendectomy is done later. There's even some suggestion that surgery can be avoided altogether some of the time. We'll have to see what is suggested for Sophie when we get her hooked up with a surgeon here in Canada.

ReplyDeleteYou know, my mother had her appendix "burst" when she was 7 months pregnant with my sister, and sure enough they had to go in and remove the darn thing. Was quite scary from what I was told--I wasn't quite 4 yrs old at the time.
Glad to hear that antibiotics can be used. Will your daughter need surgery later on or is all good now?
