Siggs are here

And still less nasty number-7 plastic. After many months of resisting the urge, I finally took the plunge and bought a Sigg metal water bottle for each of the kids. They love them. I think the bottles are beautiful and am now jealous. Who says that only children should be spared the risks of bisphenol-A? Perhaps the grown-peeps in this family should also have their own funky Siggs.

Since Health Canada has banned polycarbonate baby bottles and the Canadian government has listed bisphenol-A under Schedule 1 of the Environmental Protection Act, these bottles have been selling like hotcakes. They were hard for me to find. I finally ordered on-line (which I would not recommend due to very poor service from the company) and I could see the inventory steadily diminishing as I was clicking to view my shopping cart.

They're lovely. This family needs two more. I'll keep looking.

  1. I've had my Sigg for many months now and even though it was expensive I think it was totally worth it. No more water that tastes like plastic. We've got lots of them down here in Vancouver. Maybe you could find some on one of your trips to Calgary.

  2. We LOVE our Siggs. We splurged and bought enough for everyone when we got ours and we've been very pleased. And a hint for you just in case you need it. If your water starts to taste a little funky (we've found this happened on a few occasions), wash them as usual and then rinse with lemon juice. Works like a charm!

Oh, and I thought I would point out that Mountain Equipment Co-op sells stainless bottles now. They're made in China and I can't speak for the quality, but I noticed them yesterday while doing a little camp shopping.

  3. Which site did you buy yours from? I know they were selling well on reusablebags.com and there's usually a 20% off coupon kicking around the MDC forums.

  4. Hey Nicki, thanks for the tip. Looks like they're mostly sold out there too, at least all the ones with the sport/spout lids. They have them all enticingly listed, but when you click on 'details' they show up as unavailable. I did find one 0.6 L one still available. But because they're Swiss-made and not covered under NAFTA, I'd have to pay duty having them come from the US. I'd prefer to buy in Canada. I bought the others from NorthernSpirit.ca, the Canadian distributor.

  5. Does anyone know of any stores that sell them? I looked online too and I'd prefer to find them elsewhere if possible!

  6. Hi Nicole, here is a list of all Canadian retailers. I just found an alternate Canadian online source: MetalWaterBottleStore. Hope that helps.

I just went through the whole get-rid-of plastics thing. Did you check out Klean Kanteens? That's what we ended up with. I love the Siggs, too!
    Thank you for your blog.

How wonderful! I was just looking into buying Sigg bottles for our family. Much better than china made kleen kanteen, I think! I also was left wondering where to purchase from since many of the places in Canada I found online were sold out.
