Two and a half

What kind of a four-year-old misunderstands the following question in a math workbook:

1/2 of ___ = 5

and answers

2 1/2

without missing a beat? Sometimes her mistakes are the smartest things!

  1. She's certainly thinking clearly!
What a pleasure she must be for you.

  2. Very clever! That reminds me of something Holt said in How Children Fail about his class's argument over 6 divided by 1/2. It really does reveal a lot about the thought process.
